Understanding Photography
Listen to this lesson.
Welcome to the 2026 Photoclass!
We’re excited to have you here and to accompany you on the exploration of your photography. Our students come from all levels of experience, so wherever you are in the practice, you’re in the right place!
What is photography?
Before we get into techniques, it helps to pause and name what photography actually is. It uniquely lives where science, technology, and art overlap. The technical side matters, camera settings, tools, how things work, but the work itself is shaped by how you see.
That balance is what this class is about. We will cover how things function, and we will leave room for intuition, taste, and personal decision making. Style grows in that space.
Remember
Photography should be enjoyable.
Sometimes it feels calm, other times it feels challenging or frustrating.
That's normal. It's part of the process, and none of it means you are doing something wrong.

Before moving on, take a second to check in with yourself.
Which of these feels closest to where you are right now?
Great! Use that momentum, but pace yourself.
That’s a common starting point. Clarity comes through practice.
It’s okay to slow down. Taking breaks is part of learning, not a failure.
A G.A.S.eous State
When it comes to gear, the cliché still holds. The best camera is the one you have with you. It is easy to fall into gear envy, often called G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), but new equipment does not replace clarity of vision. Push what you already own. Learn its strengths. Notice its limits.
Once you understand those boundaries, you can make smart decisions about upgrades instead of chasing them.

Gear can be fun. Gear can also be a distraction.
If you feel the pull to upgrade, spend a little more time with what you already have and see what else it can teach you first.
